The series of images I show here began during my artist in residency on Isle Royale National Park. I was obsessed with understanding water and realized as I observed and sketched that a short hand record was my best way to capture the energy, motion and surface dynamics. I began developing a graphic format for representing water, a visual vocabulary.
My feeling is that over-describing confuses the viewer and the central idea is watered down (pun intended) and although we as viewers can be dazzled, we actually understand less. My work is more than an effort to inspire you the viewer to like my work. My purpose is also to help me and you see the world in a way that helps us understand it better, to appreciate those things that have inspired my work. My greatest compliment as an artist has been to hear friends say they were out and about and saw a "John Miller" in their world.
When we try to do too much we often achieve little. Leonardo da Vinci is attributed as saying: Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
