There is a saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. As is the case with most such sayings, this is a complex idea reduced to a sound bite. In a sound bite complexity and depth can be glossed over. Most illustrations are pictures and a good illustration augments text but also contributes additional qualities to a presentation. A good illustration can help clarify complex ideas because we see more clearly what the author is directing us to picture in our minds through their words. People learn in different ways and the mere substitution of words for pictures or pictures for words wouldn't help everybody learn more easily. Pictures can inspire confidence that we actually understand an idea and this makes reading easier. If done well, there is an esthetic attraction to a picture and this elicits an emotional response within us. We remember things most clearly when an idea triggers both cognitive and emotional reactions. - JM
